The Power of Metaphor
The metaphor is perhaps one of man’s most fruitful potentialities. It’s efficacy verges on magic - Jose Ortega y Gasset.
I am learning more about how powerful metaphor is for supporting self-awareness. Our inner world can often feel like a murky space of unconscious desires, thoughts, feelings and impressions. Metaphor is a tool used in literature to help the reader understand the inner world of the character. Metaphor allows us to experience rather than intellectualize the subconscious. Maya Angelou, Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell among many other wise leaders used the power of metaphor to inform and transform. Metaphor has been used as an aid for healing processes for thousands of years. Not only can it help us heal, but it provides clarity on our direction in life and fulfilling our deepest desires.
You may be asking yourself – what is important about understanding my inner world? My answer is that our inner world is the root of our action and movement in the outer world. By being in touch with and translating the world of feelings, we find greater purpose and meaning in our day to day lives. The world of our dreams and desires is the source of our motivation and inspiration. By connecting with a potent metaphor and returning to it over and over, we can burst past our barriers and find the perseverance to keep going.
Metaphor is a key part of the work I do with my clients. It is so beautiful to witness how metaphor becomes the epiphany and the inspiration for growth; the nexus of understanding, a point for healing and a guide for transcending an old way of being.
All which is not concrete is metaphoric -- clearly, this involves the vast majority of our everyday experiences. The structure of the unconscious - easily the most influential factor in our success in life - or more correctly said, the relationship which we have with our unconscious is easily the most important factor in our success in life - is that of metaphor - John Grinder
