Seeing and Naming Shadows - The Dark Work of Spirit
As we near the Feast of Assumption of Mother Mary, which is about love (and an event I am participating in this Monday), I find myself dropping down into one of my primary roles again - seeing and naming shadows. While preparing for this ceremony, I increasingly feel anger inside my heart. I am angry about our collective inability to face our shadows and allowing them to continue to run the show, while we pretend that Ascension or some other event is going to come along, save the day and get us out of this mess we’ve made. It doesn’t happen that way. To ascend the current pattern of our history, we are called to take responsibility for ourselves and our lives. Spirituality is as much about working shadows as it is about working light. I am naming what I see in me as well as all around me.
Here is what I see as the highest crisis and the biggest shadow we face collectively. For some of you it may seem like another crazy conspiracy theory, but the truth is increasingly apparent to me:
A criminal Military Industrial complex that has been manufacturing wars since World War II, murdering thousands and creating traumatized cultures in its wake in order to feed the coffers of a few very powerful interwoven complex of corporations
A criminal energy industry which is swiftly poisoning our planet beyond our ability to live on it
A criminal food industry that feeds us poison, causing disease and a growing health crisis in cahoots with a criminal pharmaceutical industry that feeds on the diseases created and sells us very expensive band aids while creating a revolving door of medications that for the most part make us sicker
A collusive media that does nothing but distract us from the above named, focusing our attention on a circus of non-issues and manufactured “outrages”
An increasingly self-involved tech industry which lives in a fantasy world of believing apps and gizmos will save the world, or worse, working closely in conjunction with said military industrial complex and throwing us the crumbs(toys) to distract our attention and tear apart our relationships
A criminal banking cartel that controls the entire system, and finally….
A corrupt political class that aids and abets the whole damn thing at the expense of our world and everyone in it!
We are in deep crisis. I know, it’s incredibly painful, I hate looking at it too. It makes me want to crawl into a hole or leave.
Now, in the meantime, I see my profession, the coaching, consulting,”conscious” entrepreneur industry, increasingly focused primarily on financial success (at least from the looks of all the gazillions of posts in my FB feed). I am not saying that this includes ALL of you. Those of you it does include, I think you know who you are, no matter how hard you try to pretend it’s different. And, it’s not as if I haven’t been caught up in this myself. When you don’t know where your next rent is coming from, it’s hard not to fall prey to the make more money mantra. But it is a distraction at best, a fatal mistake at worst. We are supposed to be about transformation! I know, we need resources to do that. I can’t argue with that. But, we cannot create transformation if we aren’t working towards a sustainable future for all humankind and life on this planet. Sorry folks, but money isn’t going to get us there. Yes, it appears to give us more freedom to choose and supposedly freedom of time. I don’t know about you, but that is not what I am seeing happen. I see people on another treadmill; fooling themselves into thinking this time it is different. I wanted to believe it too, but I am a practical girl and I am just noticing what is NOT happening. What I do see is a lot of systems, ponzi schemes and “how to’s” about getting more clients or how to charge more, how to reach the people who can pay more, and so on and so forth. That is NOT why I got into this profession. What about the people who can’t pay big bucks? What about them? The underlying message is that they don’t know how to manifest, it’s their fault and I shouldn’t waste MY precious time on them. This financial system and economy is exactly the problem, not the answer to it. As Audre Lorde once said, the master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house. We have to come up with something better that doesn’t feed the cartel. You may disagree with me, but I don’t think there is a magical money manifestation game without consequences, because the money system is a rigged system made to serve its masters, not you. Money is not the same thing as abundance, it is a parasite. Let’s turn some of our attention to dismantling the real culprit, the above named forces. They have to go. They will take us all down with them, and that is where we are headed if we don’t do something and money is their method. I am not talking about revolution. When has a revolution ever worked in the past? Each time it just turns into one more despotic group supplanting the last. What we need first is a novolution. NO! We say NO. That has to come before an evolution. Yes, we need to plan and think about what we want – healthy food, cures for disease, peace, beautiful landscapes, wildlife, clean water, community, self-fulfillment, etc., etc.. But we have to say no to what we don’t want too. I don’t mean keep focusing on it, I mean say no when it presents itself on a daily basis - with our feet, our attention, our bodies. And then we say Yes to the things that we do want.
It also means we set clear boundaries and name shadows inside our communities. In fact, that may be the most important work we do. If we can’t do it there in our community, how on earth are we going to do it at large? That means we see ego for what it is when it pretends to be about something else and we name it with compassion. It means we stay firm about boundaries and don’t shy away from conflict. Conflict can bring us closer when done with vulnerability and willingness to be curious and learn. It means we take risks to speak our truth and be willing to dialogue about it and also be willing to change our minds and that we don’t demonize someone when they name what they see. It means we confront our fears and really be present to our grief and grievances. It means we do our own shadow work, daily. And we do this all with compassion and vigilance.
I don’t have the answers. I don’t know what the answers are, I have few to offer. I am not that smart, but I do know that where we are is untenable and we, this community, need to have a conversation about this and that starts with naming the shadow, calling it for what it is, not falling into spiritual by-pass and pretending we can forgive before we’ve even set a boundary, or before we have even grieved our losses. And most of all and we can’t pretend that the universe is going to let us Ascend Anything if we don’t first heal our COLLECTIVE and Individual shadows. We have to love our planet enough to say NO to Her destruction, especially for an economy that serves none. After all, Jesus, the son of the Blessed Mother Mary, best known for forgiveness, TORE APART the temple of the money changers. What do you suppose the banks would do if we said no and just completely ignored them and found ways to support each other instead and quit pretending money is going to answer our problems? WE have more power than they, that’s WHY they work so hard to distract us and that’s also why we CAN create a better world. I am as caught up in this system as everyone else. I find it completely overwhelming to know how to extract myself. But I think it first starts with clear vision. That clear vision comes from love, and even more from love’s shadow, which is grief, not hate (hate comes from grief unattended). So even though I go to this ceremony in a few days with love in my heart, that love brings with it the wisdom of also being present to the deep grief I feel. I also bring with me a growing trust in my ability to see, and the deepening call inside me to name the shadows I see.
